Stop brooding over TP, focus on people’s problems: Karat

CPM leadership has asked the party members to stop brooding over the murder of T P Chandrasekharan and launch mass agitations to highlight people’s problems.

Reporting the decisions of the CPM Central Committee to party leaders from the district committee to the area committee levels of five districts in the Malabar region in Kozhikode on Thursday, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat has asked the comrades to overcome the crisis after the death of Chandrasekharan.

CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan was also present at the meeting.

Sources said that the party leadership considers the continuous attempts by the UDF and the ‘right wing’ media to put CPM on the defensive as a ploy to go ahead with anti-people policies. CPM central leadership also asked the members not to discuss party matters in the public and directed to report their dissent only within the organisational units of the party. The leadership feels that criticism against the party by members in  public always takes centrestage in the media. Due to this, the party fails to address public issues appropriately thereby giving the rightist forces an opportunity to target the party.

As far as the state is concerned, the leadership observes that the UDF government has already exploited the situation effectively. The crisis in ration shops in the state, filling of paddy fields and attempts to sell public sector undertakings to corporates under the pretext of the upcoming ‘Emerging Kerala’ event are cited as examples.

Being one among the strong bastions of the party in the country, the CPM central leadership wants the state unit to immediately take up people’s issues and launch mass agitations. As a first phase, CPM will lay siege to every district headquarters on August 22 against the central and State government’s attempt to sabotage the public distribution system. Prior to that, various party units will stage protest marches and dharnas extensively in the state.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters that the resolution of the Central Committee meeting published in the party mouthpiece ‘Deshabhimani’ the other day was complete.

There were media reports that Opposition Leader and veteran CPM leader V S Achuthanandan had sent letters to all Politburo members alleging that the resolution published in the newspaper was manipulated and did not reflect the discussions held in the Central Committee meeting.
