Medical student commits suicide

Niyaz, 21, a student of Karuna Medical College at Vilayodi, near Chittur, committed suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of the boys’ hostel at the college on Thursday.

Niyaz was a third year MBBS student of the college and the only son of Dr Mohammed Basheer and Sabeena, who are residing near the Cosmopoliton Club at Manapulikavu near Palakkad. Eyewitnesses said that Niyaz had been speaking to someone on his mobile phone just before committing suicide.

Later, he threw the phone to the ground and then jumped down himself around 11.15 am.

The impact of the fall caused fatal injuries to the skull. He was taken to the college ICU, but by 12 noon doctors confirmed the death.

Pudunagaram police said that the deceased was in love with a girl and that he had spoken about the matter with his parents earlier. The police are investigating the death based on the calls made from his phone just before committing suicide.

Pudunagaram police station SI K P Benny visited the college premises and took stock of the situation.

This is the second suicide case in the college within the past six months. Previously, a girl student had hanged herself in the girls’ hostel.

Former MLA K Krishnankutty has demanded a high-level inquiry into the deaths of students at the college.

He said that the academic performance of the college had been very poor compared to other medical colleges in the state, and an overall probe was needed to sort out the issues affecting the students.
