HC annuls amendments in Abkari policy on bar license

Friday, July 27, 2012: The Kerala High Court on Friday cancelled the amendments in the Abkari rule relating to bar licenses. The Court canceled the amendment of not providing bar licenses to three star hotels.

The division bench with justices C N Ramachandran and Vinod Chandran proclaimed the order on a petition submitted by a group of disgruntled hotel owners and bar owners in opposition to the governmental stance that bar licences need to be issued only to hotels with four star facilities or above. The Court also cancelled the amendment relating to the distance limits of bars. The court, which observed that the amendments were unscientific, stated it will adversely affect the tourism sector.
