Nobody can write off Congress party: Antony

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader A K Antony has said that the party had expected a defeat in the Lok Sabha election but never imagined that its intensity would be of such a magnitude. But he said, “the Congress represents India’s culture and nobody can script the final fate of the party,” he said.

He said: “As far as the Congress is concerned, defeat is not a new thing. The Congress will make a comeback, fighting every bit to regain the lost trust among the people. It is not an easy task… Rahul or Sonia can’t be blamed for the poll defeat. Rahul is the Congress person who had done maximum campaigns. The responsibility of the defeat is equally shared by Congress leader.”

Antony said there was no move in the party to remove Rahul or Sonia. The Congress would return under the leadership of Sonia and Rahul. He would not be considered for the post of Rajya Sabha Opposition leader, while the party would function as a constructive Opposition.

The Congress leader said Kerala had done a good job even when there was anti-Congress sentiment throughout India. But for a few controversies, UDF would have got three or four additional seats. Lauding Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his government, Antony said “UDF will win again if the assembly elections are held”.

Antony added that he was stepping down as defence minister with a sense of satisfaction. He clamed that he could do many things for Kerala, ensure the security of the nation and boost the morale of Indian military forces.
