THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government Wednesday decided to provide subsidised LPG cylinders only to families coming under Below Poverty Line (BPL) in the state. The decision was taken during talks held between the chief minister and finance minister.
The party core committee meet directed the Congress chief ministers to increase the number of subsidised cylinders from 6 to 9. The state government decided to deliver nine subsidised LPG cylinders only to BPL families.
The centre now bears the subsidy of six cylinders. The subsidy of the three extra cylinders delivered to BPL families will now be borne by the state government.
There are almost 72 lakh gas connection holders in the state. The finance ministry opined that if the government provides nine LPG cylinders on subsidised rates to all gas connection holders in the state then it would bring a heavy loss to the government exchequer.
