CHENNAI: In a strong setback to Kerala, the Chennai bench of the national green tribunal Wednesday cancelled the environmental clearance given to the proposed airport project in Aranmula.
The bench led by Justice Chockalingam ordered KGS Group, the promoters of the project, not to carry on any work in the area. The court passed the order following the plea of Ranganathan and Royson, activists of Aranmula Heritage Protection Committee.
The four reasons cited for cancelling the environmental clearance are enough statements were not recorded from the public, enviro care, the agency who conducted an environmental study for the project do not have the required qualification, a study was not conducted on the environmental impact and lastly the project will badly affect environment.
The bench observed that the KGS Group obtained the clearance after flouting rules. The bench also rejected state government’s argument that green tribunal has no right to consider the plea.
