THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was like watching the nail-biting finish of a T20 cricket match! At the end of the exciting neck-to-neck race between UDF candidate Shashi Tharoor and BJP candidate O Rajagopal, the former emerged victorious by a lead of 14, 501 votes.
Tharoor garnered 2,96,319 votes and Rajagopal 2,81,818 while pushing LDF candidate Bennet Abraham down to third place with 2,48,202 votes.
Initial counting trend had given a clear lead to Rajagopal. And, Bennet, not even once, could pose a threat to the other two. Rajagopal held the lead until 75% votes were counted. At one point, he looked sure to win and BJP activists started celebrations, but in a sudden unexpected downward trend, Rajagopal started losing the lead.
