THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In its report to the government, Income Tax Secretary has said that there is no need to re-open as many as 418 bars that was found to be sub-standard ones. Among the bars that are functioning, there are still sub-standard ones. The government should conduct checks to find out such bars.
The report will be discussed in the next cabinet meeting.
It says that 316 bars are currently functioning, out of which, many are reportedly not up to the mark. Such bars should be inspected under the supervision of District Collector. Also, a committee should be formed to conduct regular checks.
The IT secretary’s report has come at a time when dual opinions continue to exist in the Congress party regarding the renewal of bar licences. On the other hand, the Excise department had informed the government that shut-down bars could be given the permission to function again. But KPPCC president has been adamant in his stand against issuing licences. He is also of the opinion that bars which have failed to upgrade their facilities all these years need not be given time for upgradation.
