Kochuveli:Action in earnest from today

The district administration plans to tighten its watch over waste-dumping in earnest from Monday onwards, District Collector K N Satheesh has said. The  administration had clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the city on Friday to deal with the waste crisis. Meanwhile, a crucial meeting of the Corporation Council planned for Monday will assess the ‘garbage’ situation and take necessary steps. The District Collector and other top district officials also have been asked to attend the meeting.

The meeting assumes significance as the Corporation has started dumping garbage at the construction sites of the Railway at Kochuveli. Nearly 15 truck-loads were disposed of at Veli on Sunday, Satheesh said.

With Section 144 in place, the local people also did not try to block the dumping as they did two days ago.

Also, with complaints arising that the Corporation was not segregating the waste before dumping at the railway construction site, the authorities have started doing so from Sunday.

‘’There were complaints on Saturday that a few consignments contained non-segregated waste. This has been addressed. Instructions have

been given that only segregated wastes should be dumped here,’’ Satheesh said.

With the Corporation running out of dump-yard options in the months following the closure of the Vilappilsala garbage treatment plant, the Railway had agreed to use

garbage as filling materials on its construction sites here, including Kochuveli.

The first day, the Corporation trucks were blocked by the local people and the police arrested and removed 17 people.
