Manjeri Medical College’s recognition temporarily suspended

MALAPPURAM: The Medical Council of India has temporarily suspended the recognition of Manjeri Government Medical College. The council’s action came after the college failed to provide the infrastructure and make recruitment as per the norms prescribed by the council.

Manjeri medical college was inaugurated on September 1 last year. There are about 100 MBBS seats here. The suspension of recognition has raised the students’ anxiety about their future. The medical council has also asked Principal Dr. P V Narayanan to stop new admissions for the next academic year.

The medical college has not been able to start full-fledged OP and IP till date. According to the assurance given by the government, the college should have made 95 recruitments including that of doctors. But this has not happened, even though the government had said that all criteria would be fulfilled before the next evaluation by the council.

The council said that 85 percent of the posts for teaching staff and 73 percent of the posts for non-teaching staff in the medical college are still lying vacant.

The government had also frozen the post of vice-president. The companies, which had supplied equipment to the medical college, took them back after the payment was not released by the government on due date.
