Heavy fine if electric meter reading cannot be taken

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The electricity board has decided to squeeze the public by bringing in a new system. A heavy fine will be charged from people if the reading cannot be taken. If reading cannot be taken twice, a fine of Rs 250 to 500 will be charged from the people. A move is on to execute the system from next month beginning onwards.  The explanation given by the authorities is that the new system is being implemented as per the directive of the electricity regulatory commission.

Some houses remain closed when people come to take the reading. Due to this, the bill will have to be prepared as per the previous charge and this is causing a heavy loss to the board. Some purposely go out locking their houses when it’s time for the reading to be taken. Arrangement should be made to take the reading even if people go out.
