Passenger in possession of 20 bullets taken into custody

KOCHI: Police took a passenger bound for Hong Kong via Kuala Lumpur into custody with 20 bullets in his baggage at the Nedumbassery international airport in the early hours of Monday.

According to police the passenger, identified as Salim (52), a native of Pazhyangadi in Kannur, and said to be employed in Hong Kong, was taken into custody as he had with him 20 bullets (.32 mm) concealed in his baggage. This came to light during screening at the airport.

On preliminary interrogation, the passenger told the police that he had licence for the revolver and also possesses 150 cartridges. He said he could produce the licence for them.

Police have begun investigation. The passenger was now in police custody, the sources said.

However, Kannur District Collector, the licence issuing authority, told UNI on phone that, during the past two years, licence to possess large number of cartridges, to his knowledge, was not issued and the case would be looked into. He said the office had also issued instructions to bring down the number of cartridges one can possess.
