Jail DGP shunted out; additional charge for Sen Kumar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government on Friday removed Jail DGP Alexander Jacob from his post though he earlier retracted his controversial statements and tendered his apology to the government via a letter to the home minister.

Kerala Intelligence ADGP Sen Kumar has been given the additional charge of Jail DGP.

The government’s move came after the Congress and the UDF disapproved of the DGP’s apology and stuck to their demand for his resignation.

However, there are allegations from several quarters that Alexander Jacob, who has laboured for several jail reformations, is being made a scapegoat. While Congress leaders have demanded disciplinary action against Jacob, the Muslim League said that the home minister should also bear the responsibility of Kozhikode jail controversy.

In an interview given to a private channel, the DGP has said that he goofed up while talking to about 50 media persons on Thursday and he could not mince words “like politicians”.

The DGP had said that the Facebook controversy was raked up to legally trap the TP murder case accused if they happened to escape prison term in cases already pending against them. He also said that there was nothing wrong in K K Lathika, MLA, the wife of another accused P Mohanan, meeting the latter at the MLA restaurant. In the letter, Jacob had retracted the above statements.

“While there was a barrage of criticism against jail staff over the past few days, nobody came to their help and hence I had to speak up for them,” he said.

He also added that some leaders who took part in T V channel discussions are those who often came to him, recommending better facilities for their acquaintances lodged in jails.
