THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It seems there will be no need to scout for hangman to execute Aluva mass murder case convict Antony as Thiruvananathapuram Poojappura Central Jail Superintend Sam Thankachan has expressed his willingness to perform the job. It is known that Thankachan himself has informed DGP about this.
The Superintend doesn’t have previous experience in hanging but earlier he had witnessed one. Gossipers in his department says Sam’s only courage to do the task is his earlier experience.
The last hanging incident in Kerala was in July 1991 when ripper Chandran was hanged to death in Kannur Central jail. As part of his duty as a jail officer, he witnessed the event then.
Now that the superintendent has come forward to hang the convict, it is not known whether the jail department will search for a hangman. Meanwhile all preparations are going on in Poojappura Central jail to carry out the capital punishment.
At present there is no official hangman in Kerala. To hang ripper Chandran, a hangman was called in from Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. It is known that about Rs 2 lakh is the wage given for hanging a person.
The last hanging incident in Poojappura Central jail happened in 1978; a native of Kaliyikkavila was hanged then.
