PATHANAPURAM: A python which was caught by locals and bundled up in a sack was stolen by a three-member team who reached the spot on Wednesday. Based on the locals’ complaint, Forest Range officials later recovered an Alto Car, suspected to have been used for snake smuggling. The vehicle has been taken in custody.
The snake was seen in the evening in front of Varghese’ house at Vilakkudi Grama panchayat. Many came to see the snake after it became the talk of the locality. The locals after hours’ attempt managed to push the snake into the sack. The forest officials were then informed.
As soon as the crowd dispersed, the three-member team slowly walked towards the bundle, grabbed it, put it in their car and drove away. Later, when the locals came to know that they were being duped, a mobile clipping shot by an onlooker came to their help. The car number was visible in the clipping.
By Thursday evening, the car was spotted by a team led by Pathanapuram Range Officer Chandran Pillai. The car’s owner was found to be a resident of Punalur. The search is on for the snake and snake thieves.
