Mahout dies after coconut tree falls on him

THRISSUR: A mahout died after a coconut tree pulled down by  his elephant fell on him. The elephant was tethered to a tree near Alappadu Kodupunga temple where it was brought for Vishupooram (parading of elephants on Vishu day). The dead has been identified as Peringottukara Pandarathara Manikantan (32).

It was the pranks of the elephant named Pazhankulathu Koran Mohan that proved fatal for its owner. The jumbo which was tied to the coconut tree became restless at 12 in the midnight.

Manikantan, who was sleeping at a place nearby, reached the spot and tried to calm down the elephant. The annoyed animal knocked him down with its tusk. After that it pulled down the coconut tree, which fell on Manikantan. Though he was taken to hospital, his life could not be saved.
