THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A new brand of readymade shirts and churidhars stitched by prisoners will hit the market during this Onam season, Made in Poojapura Central Jail. The jail has forayed into garment business by manufacturing readymade cotton shirts and churidhars under the brand name samraksha.
The shirts and churidhars are made from the raw material provided by the weaving unit of the prison. The shirts are almost ready and work on churidhars will begin soon. The things would be sold at half the market rate. The shirt manufacturing unit has 15 persons and another 15 for the churidhar unit. Presently there are 15 modern sewing machines. Almost 50 shirts are stitched daily.
Jail chief Loknath Behra will convene a meet tomorrow to discuss things to make the churidhar manufacturing unit more effective. He told Kerala Kaumudi that shirts and churidhars from jail would be of good quality. Prisoners completing jail term would be able to earn a living by this, he said.
The manufacturing unit has prisoners trained well. Training would be given to others also. Shirts and churidhars worth Rs 750 to Rs 1000 would reach the market and will be sold at Rs 250 to 500.
