No cause for worry over Mullaperiyar dam: P J Joseph

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Water Resources Minister P J Joseph has said that there is no need for worry over the rise in water level in the Mullaperiyar dam. He said at a press conference here on Monday that Idukki district collector had been given instructions to take all precautionary to meet any eventuality.

“As many as 206 families living in the surroundings of the dam will be relocated to a safe place. Steps have been initiated on that account. The families residing at Vallakkadavu, Upputhara and Ayyappan Kovil will be shifted to different places. All efforts will be made to ensure the safety of people’s life,” Joseph said.

Centre seeks report

Meanwhile, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has sought a report on the rising water level in Mullaperiyar dam. He has sought the report from Water Resources Secretary and asked the latter to submit it on Tuesday itself. The minister informed that further steps would be taken after receiving the report.

Kerala MPs have also apprised Uma Bharati of people’s anxiety over the rising water level in the dam.
