KUMILY: Panic gripped the people living in the downstream areas of Mullaperiyar dam as the water level keep rising threatening to cross the maximum permitted level of 142 feet. The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam reached 141.5 feet last evening. As heavy rains continued in the catchment areas, the water level rose to 141.8 feet Monday morning. If rains continue today the water level is expected to touch 142 feet. The rate of inflow to the reservoir is 2852 cubic feet per second and Tamil Nadu is drawing 1852 cubic feet per second.
If the water level touches 142 feet, Tamil Nadu will draw more water to Vaiga reservoir in an hour. Kerala has requested Tamil Nadu to draw more water. As the water level has risen, the collector has alerted those residing near Neyyar to be more cautious.
The Idukki district collector has asked Theni district collector to inform them before 12 hours if a situation arises to open the dam. Kerala has requested not to open dams during night time.
