Politicians should learn to overcome temptations : Azhikode

Tuesday, June 28, 2011: Writer and social activist Sukumar Azhikode said.here that the politicians should rise above petty interests. He was delivering a lecture on ‘Tatvamasi – a modern view’ under the auspices of the Centre for Classical Studies.
“Social ills do not trouble politicians. But denial of Cabinet berths to them does. Recently, we came across the ire of a Congress leader who had not been selected as a minister,” he said. The politicians should learn to overcome temptations.
“Is any Minister in the UPA Cabinet worthy of comparison to one in the Jawaharlal Nehru Cabinet? For that matter, even modern-day sanyasis find temptations irresistible,” Mr. Azhikode said.
He noted that religion and caste existed in society only because they were being used for social and political purposes. “If you stop using them for your petty interests, they will vanish,” he said.
Kerala University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor K. Mohandas lit the traditional lamp to inaugurate the lecture programme.
