Amritanandamayi mutt: Contempt of court petition rejected

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition pleading that it was contempt of court on the part of the Kerala government for not filing case against Amritanandamayi mutt on the basis of revelations made by former mutt inmate Gail Tredwell in her book. The court’s move came after the government submitted in the court that there was no evidence to support Tredwell’s claims.

Senior Advocate K Venugopal informed the court that though primary investigation was conducted, there was nothing found as evidence so that the case would stand in a court of law. The government also clarified that it was not possible to file a case on an incident that is said to have happened 20 years ago.

It was Supreme Court advocate Deepak Prakash who had filed the petition against DGP K S Balasubramanyam, former Home Affairs secretary L Radhakrishnan, Kollam City police commissioner Debesh Kumar Breha, for contempt of court. It was alleged in the petition that the case was not filed since the chief minister and home minister were not keen on following it up.
