LPG gas cylinder strike called off

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: LPG gas truckers, who were on strike, called off their protest on Saturday. The decision follows discussions held by Kerala State Tanker Lorry Workers Union representatives and representatives of Truck owners’ association with Labour Commissioner P G Thomas today. In the discussion, it was agreed that 15 percent of the arrears of salary hike from January 2014 would be given to the truckers, shortly, as interim relief.

Organisation representatives informed that the workers would resume their duty after noon on Saturday. The status quo will continue until a final decision is arrived at.
Discussion will be held again in May 17.

For three oil companies in the State there are seven LPG plants. Striking workers were those from Kazhakootam, Udayamperoor, Karimukal, Irumbanam, Kanjikkode, and Chelari plants. Since the truckers’ agreement at Parippalli plant was renewed during last Onam, they did not go on strike.

The term of the agreements with workers at Kazhakootam plant and other plants had expired on last October and December, respectively.

The truckers now earn Rs 575 a day to distribute cylinder in an area. What they demand is 25 percent hike in that.
