WAYANAD: Revenue officials and police, who reached Harison land in Arippara to clear the land of illegal encroachers, on Saturday, were blocked by CPM and strikers, leading to skirmishes. In the melee, a few agitators poured kerosene all over their body and climbed atop trees as if in an attempt to commit suicide. Later, the strike was called off temporarily after the collector invited the agitators for talks.
The incident happened at around 9 in the morning. At the protest place , there was a mob of 100 people, led by CPM leader C K Sasindran. A team led by Kalpatta DySP Sabu soon reached the place to control the agitators.
For about two years 415 families have been living in shanties build on five gardens under the ownership of Harison plantation in Wayanad. Vythiri Tahsildar had long before instructed the people, who were on strike in front of their dwellings, to evacuate and move to some other place. But the instruction had fallen on deaf ears.
Meanwhile, those who were evacuated from Nedumbalaya from Wayanad had a harrowing time today. Abiding by a court order, eight families were evacuated from Harison Malayalam’s land last Tuesday by police and revenue officials.
Five families among them, which had no place to go, were later temporarily shifted to Meppadi govt LP school. It was these families who had to face of the wrath of the officials today.
