KARUANAGAPALLY: IRE’s lorries that reached Vellanathuruthil for black sand quarrying were blocked by local women folks, leading to skirmishes in the area.
Later, the police had to wield lathis to disperse the mob. About 50 women were arrested by Karunagapally police.
The incident happened at around 7:30 in the morning. The new protest method was devised by the women under the leadership of Panchayat member Satheeratnam in order to protest IRE’s move to take over the land without relocating its dwellers.
Meanwhile, more than 200 policemen under Karunagapally Assistant Commissioner Devamanohar took out a route march from Panickarkkadavu to Vellanathuruthi, expressing their portection to Black sand quarrying.
After the route march, when three Tipper lorries came to load black sand, the women groups which had gathered near Kochochira St Sebastian church, blocked the lorries. The police team which rushed to the spot wielded lathis to disperse the crowd, arrested about 50 women and took them to the police station. This created tension in the area.
The police have been trying to workout a compromise formula with the local residents, since. Meanwhile, IRS has started taking steps to transport the sand with the help of police.
