KOLLAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the backward class continued to be a neglected group even today. He was also once victim of that neglect. The Prime was addressing the public after unveiling the statue of former chief minister R Shankar at Kollam S N College on Tuesday.
“Nobody needs to teach me the discrimination and the neglect backward classes will have to face because I have gone through all that. The only solution for the uplift of the backward class is to practice the preaching of great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru in real life. R Shankar had been a chief minister only for two years but his contribution tor social reformation was priceless. Shankar still lives in the minds of people. He was a person who upheld Guru’s values and practised his teachings, said Modi, adding that the Centre will try to fulfil the former chief minister’s dreams.
The prime minister said Shankar set apart his life for implementing Guru’s principles instead of remaining a mere spokesperson of practical politics. Shankar, who lived for the educational and social progress of the poor and downtrodden could be compared to a guru or God.
“R Shankar and NSS founder Mannathu Padmanabhan jointly formed Hindu Mahamandalam. It was Shyama Prasad Mukeherjee who got the invitation to attend its function. Today’s BJP men are the decedents of the institution he once represented. I am honoured to be part of it. That day Shyama Prasad could not attend the function due to some physical discomfort. Later when he came to Thiruvananthapuram, R Shankar went and met him. Sometime later Shyam Prasad invited Shankar to Jan Sangh’s function, in spite of the latter being not a member of Jan Sangh,” Modi recalled.
