ASI injured in attack by policeman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A civil police officer, allegedly in an inebriated condition, thrashed an additional sub-inspector (ASI), who sustained serious injuries in the attack in the Naruvamoodu police station late on Tuesday. According to the police, V S Gopakumar, 49, residing in the Nemom police quarters, had left after his first shift around 9 pm on Tuesday and returned, reportedly after getting drunk, around 10.30 pm. He asked to use the official telephone in the police station, a request that was refused by ASI N K Pradeep on seeing Gopakumar’s condition. This, however, infuriated Gopakumar, who after hurling a few abuses at the officer, launched an attack on him.

Even as other policemen in the station managed to rescue Pradeep, Gopakumar returned armed with a stone from outside the station and attacked the ASI again, causing deep injuries on his forehead. While Pradeep was shifted to the hospital, Gopakumar was overpowered and shifted to the Neyyattinkara police station. His arrest was recorded on Wednesday based on a complaint lodged by the ASI, after which he was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody. The police said Gopakumar was earlier under treatment for alcoholism and had resumed drinking only recently.
