National School athletic meet in Kozhikode from Jan 25

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finally, Kerala government has decided to conduct National School Athletics meet in Kozhikode. The announcement in this regard will made after tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting. The event will be held from January 25 to 30. Kerala decided to host the event in the midst of uncertainties regarding the choice of a state to conduct the event.

Though the first choice was Maharashtra, suggestions for separate venues for boys and girls had resulted in a controversy. Groups including Kerala Sports Council had come out to protest against gender discrimination. Following this, though it was decided to hold the event in Goa, the state didn’t concede. Next, Kerala’s permission was fought. Kerala was also initially unwilling to give the nod due to some date issues in the wake of upcoming Assembly election, youth festival and SSLC examination. Later when it was found that not hosting the event would adversely affect the athletic prospects of Kerala, which is continuing as the champion, the State government decided to hold the event.

Kerala’s decision was also influenced by constant efforts put forth by sportspersons P T Usha and Anju Boby George. Anju informed that arrangements for the Games had already started.
