Deer poaching: One arrested; two local guns seized

KOTTAYAM: One among the three-member gang which was returning home with the carcass of deer they had hunted down was nabbed by police today morning. Three persons however escaped from the police. The incident happened today 5 am at Plasanal within Erattupettah police station limits.

The police took into custody the jeep inside which there was deer’s body with blood oozing out of bullet injuries on it. Two local guns including a double barrel gun were also seized from the jeep.  

The arrested was Mundakkayam Parathanam native Thomas (35). By questioning him, the police have been able to identify the others in the gang and police have started the search for Plasanal natives Anil and Sunil. The deer was reportedly hunted from Parathanam forest area. Forest officials have also been called in to aid the investigation. The plan of the hunters was to skin the dead animal and distribute its meat among their friends celebrating Christmas.  

According to the police, the gang frequented the area for hunting and the operation to nab them was carried out on a tip-off received by District Police Chief Satheesh Binoy. The trap to nab the hunters was laid by Erattupettah CI C G Sanil Kumar and SI K S Jayan under the directions of Pala DySP Suneesh Babu.
