Mosque demolished

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A major hindrance to the progress of the four-laning of the Karamana- Pravachambalam stretch has been overcome. The mosque and tomb at Pappanamcode, the focal point of a controversy for long, have been demolished. The work came to an end on Monday evening with the removal of the tomb. Subsequently, the Public Works Department (NH wing) cleared the debris from the site and commenced the road work in the portion on Tuesday.

According to an official, bituminous macadam would be applied on the portion within a few days. Thus bituminous concrete could be laid there at the same time as the rest of the 5.5-km stretch until Pravachambalam.

However, the work would be taken up only after Kerala Water Authority (KWA) discontinues water supply to the existing pipes. The State government had signaled a breakthrough in the impasse concerning the mosque and tomb by deciding to sanction a plot of four cents of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). This was the result of hectic parleys. Certain right-wing organizations had opposed the earlier attempts to resolve the issue.
