Ship hits fishing boat, fishermen rescued


KANNUR: Eight fish workers in a fishing boat were rescued by another fishing boat when their boat capsized in the sea off Thanur in Malappuram after it was hit by a ship in the early hours of Saturday. According to Fisheries Department officials, the eight fish workers fishing in a boat named St Antony, registered in Tamil Nadu, have been admitted to a hospital here on Saturday. According to the fish workers, the accident occurred in the waters off the Thanur coast  on Saturday. They were rescued by a fishing boat from Azhikkal here. The injured have been identified as Thadevus (49), Pradeep (36), Varghese (41) Gerald (54), Selvai (44), Wilson (42), Surendran (35) and Anil (28). They were from Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari areas. The version of the rescued fishermen is that the boat was broken into three after it was hit by the ship. They also said the location of the accident and the time of accident have been reported to the agencies concerned to identify the vessel that hit the fishing boat.
