KOCHI: The hartal called to save Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), the first public sector organization of South India, began here Monday morning. KSRTC buses and private vehicles are seen on roads. Majority of the shops remain closed. Private buses are not operating services. Protestors pelted stones at the Island Express.
The 12-hour hartal was called by the district trade union co-ordination committee and Save FACT action committee. The 24-hour public strike by industrial firms started on Sunday midnight. The protestors blocked trains at Kalamassery. Ernakulam ATO S K Suresh Kumar said a notice was not given by KSRTC employees on participating in the strike. There will be no change in the exams of MG University.
The hartal is to press the government for a 991-crore package, as recommended by the Board of Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises some five months back.
