Thursday 2 May 2011: In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gave a virtual clean chit to the Tata Group, saying that it did not in any way gain from the colossal 2G spectrum scam, reports claimed Thursday.
Deposing before a court here, the investigating agency said that no irregularities have been found in issuing licenses to Tata and it was done as per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) norms.
The CBI’s definitive stand was in response to a plea filed in the court claiming that Niira Radia had played an active role in the grant of licenses to Tata Teleservices.
“The CBI, much before the filing of the charge sheet and during the course of the investigation, had information about the violation in the granting of licenses to Tata Teleservices under pressure and active role played by Radia, but either deliberately or due to oversight, the CBI had missed the vital role of other persons in terms of the allotment of the licenses to Tata Teleservices,” the deponent had claimed.
Moreover, it was pointed out that the Justice Shivraj Patil Committee, appointed by telecom ministry to inquiry lapses of procedures and irregularities in the telecom policy, had also pointed out that Tatas had not applied for the Unified Access Service licenses till October 1, 2007, the last date as per the press release by the Department of Telecommunication.
