Thursday 02 May 2011: The 13th Kerala Legislative Assembly will elect its Speaker today. G. Kathikeyan, nominee of the UDF, and A.K. Balan, the nominee of the LDF, are the contestants. The election is through secret ballot by the members of the Assembly; and the polling will begin at 9 a.m.
The House has 141 members, including the nominated member Ludy Luis. The support of a minimum of 70 members will be required to be elected if all the members cast their votes validly. (It is not usual for votes to be declared invalid if not marked correctly.
This has happened more than once in the past elections of Speakers in Kerala). The ruling UDF has 73 members in the House, including the nominated member who is also eligible to vote.
Usually, the candidates and the pro-tem Speaker do not vote. However, they may vote when the election is a close race.
