R Balakrishna Pillai likely to be freed soon

Monday, July 04, 2011: R Balakrishna Pillai, who will be coming out of Poojappura Central Prison here on July 5 on a one month parole, is unlikely to return as the Congress led UDF Government is gearing up to let him free soon after the Assembly session gets over on July 20.
Balakrishna Pillai will be coming out of jail once again on Tuesday on a one month parole, which was accorded to him on Saturday.
This parole assumes significance as Pillai has already exhausted his maximum parole period of 45 days.
With the present decision to give one month’s parole, Pillai’s total sentence period will now be extended to one more month, as per the rules.
Pillai was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10, 000 in the Idamalayar graft case by the Supreme Court.
Pillai had submitted a remission petition before the government. The Home Secretary had sought a report from ADGP (Prisons) Alexander Jacob on the remission petition and the report submitted to the government had said that there was no precedence of granting remission for an accused in a corruption case.
However, the UDF Government is learnt to have taken a decision to give remission for those who have crossed 70 years of age and are languishing in jail.
