Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple : SC flays Justice CS Rajan

Wednesday, July 06, 2011: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed videography of the ongoing unearthing of treasure trove inside chambers of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala.
A bench of justices R.V. Raveendran and A.K. Patnaik also proposed the appointment of a curator of a museum to preserve the treasure being unearthed from the centuries-old temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Court also aired its displeasure over statements made by one of the panel members Justice CS Rajan regarding the wealth of the temple.
The Supreme Court’s directions came during the hearing of a petition by the heir of erstwhile king of Travancore Raja Rama Varma, challenging a Kerala High Court ruling of January 31 this year, ordering takeover of the assets and management of the shrine by the State.

The Supreme Court today criticized retired high court judge, Justice CS Rajan, for publicising the details of the treasure trove found at the Sree Padmananabhaswamy temple vaults during the inventory process.
C.S. Rajan is an observer of the seven-member committee appointed by the SC for taking an inventory of the precious articles in the six temple vaults (kallaras).
Court also instructed the Rajan from publicising the details of the temple assets. Court also ordered that the treasure found at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple must be filmed.
Rajan while giving an interview to a private channel had said that he had never laid eyes on so much gold in his entire life. Rajan said that it was an amazing sight to see such a large quantity of jewels which one can never see in a lifetime and it was indeed a rare experience.
He said the details of each valuable had been recorded in a scientific method. But the exact value of the treasure might vary from the figures that appeared in the media, he said. “The Supreme Court has not asked us to assess the value of the treasure,” he said.
