Income tax officials held for accepting bribe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CBI Thursday took into custody three persons including income tax principal commissioner and an officer for accepting bribe. A team led by CBI unit DySP Sreevasthava took into custody income tax principal commissioner Shailendra Mammady, officer Sharath and intermediary Alex.


Shailendra Mammady was taken into custody for a accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the owner of a jewellery shop in Ettumanoor. Allegation against Sharath is that he worked as an intermediary in the case. Alex was taken into custody for acting as an intermediary to obtain the bribe from the jewellery owner.

In the raid conducted at Sharath’s house at PTP Nagar in the capital city last night, 10 bullets and foreign liquor were seized. The raid which started yesterday ended early this morning. He told the CBI team that his neighbor, a retired colonel gave him the bullets before his death. He is taken to the CBI office in Vazhuthacaud by officials Salim and Sommayya for questioning.

A case has also been registered against Sharath by the Vattiyoorkavu police for possessing bullets and liquor. The allegation against Mammady is that he accepted the bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the jewellery owner through the intermediary for adjudicating the income tax arrears of Pavvathil Jewellery in Kottayam. The cash was handed over to the officer at a flat in Kottayam. The arrest of Mammady taken into custody last evening has not been registered. He is still being questioned.

The CBI is also conducting a raid at the houses of other income tax officers, who handled the documents in connection with the tax arrears of the jewellery, in Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram. Mammady from Chennai reached the capital city three months back.
