NEW DELHI: The ministry of environment and forests has extended the environmental clearance for the proposed Anthirappilly hydroelectric project. It has been extended till 2017. The tenure of the project expired in 2012. Following that, Kerala approached the expert panel seeking extension of the clearance. The ministry has sent a letter informing the KSEB about the extension. With the extension of the environmental clearance, the electricity board can now move forward with the project.
Meantime, Electricity Minister Aryadan Muhammed said the government has not taken a decision on the project and only after convening an all-party meet, a decision could be taken in implementing the project.
The project was aimed to generate 160 megawatt of electricity. However, due to disapproval of environmental activists the project has not been able to commence so far.
