IDUKKI: Three spillways were opened Tuesday morning following the rise of water level in the Mullapperiyar dam. Eight shutters of the spillway which was opened last night without a warning had to be closed this morning. Tamil Nadu increased the intake of water for Vaiga dam.
They are now drawing 2100 cubic feet water from 1400 cubic feet water hourly. When eight spillway shutters were opened together, the water level was low in the Mullapperiyar dam. At 8 am today, the water level in the dam was 141.69 feet. Three spillways were opened when the water level in the dam rose as rains are lashing the catchment areas of the dam.
With the opening of the spillway, the water level rose by a feet in Periyar. With this, the low lying areas in Upputhara, Vandiperiyar and Vallakkadavu are under water. People have been evacuated and shifted to camps. Officials including the ADM reached the spot to comfort the panicked people. The residents first disagreed to shift from their homes. The district collector visited the places which are under water after the opening of the spillway.
