THIRUVANANTHPUARAM: The police Friday arrested two women in connection with the mass suicide at Kilimanoor. The two identified as Mumtaz (50) of Kallambalam and Meharban (52) of Puthusserimukku were arrested by control room circle inspector from their relative’s house in Kallambalam. The two are sisters of Shofita, mother of Jasmine, who committed suicide by jumping in the Aakkulam Lake. The two brought to Pettah police station have been taken to the women’s cell for interrogation.
They will be questioned by assistant commissioner Jawahar Janardh, control room circle inspector Prasad and women’s cell circle inspector led by city police commissioner H Venkitesh.
Kilimanoor natives Shofita, her daughter Jasmine and her daughter Fathima allegedly jumped off the Akkulam Bridge last Sunday. Shofita survived and the other two died. The next day the body of Shofita’s younger daughter Sajina was found on the tracks behind the Arappura Vilakom Devi Temple.
The relatives told police that the family was in a deep financial crisis, with Jasmine’s husband Rahim reportedly being jailed in Qatar on charges of financial fraud.
The suicide note found in Jasmine’s house in Kilimanoor named Nasser of Alamcode, and her two aunts of cheating the family, allegedly after pretending to help them through a severe financial crisis. Nasser was taken into custody soon after. Shofita, in her statement had also mentioned Nasser.
It is learned that Jasmine sold their property in Attingal to help Rahim out of jail. Nasser was allegedly entrusted with the job of sending the money, nearly Rs 1.20 crore, to Qatar before the deadline on Sunday, which he reportedly did not, thus shattering Rahim’s chances of freedom.
