KOTTAYAM: AITUC state secretary Kanam Rajendran has been chosen as the CPI state secretary. Kanam was chosen for the post after K E Ismail withdrew from the fray in the last minute following central leadership’s strong intervention.
Along with that an 89-member state council has also been selected. Half from the state council supported Kanam for the post. He had also the support of Panniyan Raveendran, who relinquished from the post.
Chances for a race erupted as Kanam and Ismail stood firm. All measures including a secret ballot were arranged. The central leadership intervened strongly and directed Ismail to withdraw from the fray.
Kanam, also a member of the CPI national executive council, was born on November 10, 1950 at Kanam in Kottayam. He was elected from Vazhoor in the seventh and eighth Kerala Assembly. He was the AIYF state secretary. He is the president of MACTA, an organisation of Malayalam Cine Technicians Association. A welfare board for construction workers was formed following the bill presented by Rajendran in the assembly.
