‘Nisham also had links with spirit mafia’; police in bribery tangle

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  Amidst the allegation that controversial business man Nisham Muhammed has been trying to subvert the Chandrabose murder case, spirit bribery controversy involving certain policemen is also beginning to grab headlines.

The stories about the bribery started coming out ever since one of the two police officers who faced bribery allegations was suspended. It was alleged that the two officers were overtly interfering in hindering the progress of the Chandrabose murder case.

According to sources, an MLA and a prominent businessman in Ernakulam are even now trying to sabotage the case. A Thrissur MLA is also there to help them. It was according to Ernakulam MLA’s instruction that Nisham was taken to Bangalore. The idea was to delay the probe and give an opportunity to Nisham to contact his helpers.
The delay being made by the Motor Vehicle department to examine Nisham’s killer vehicle Hummer also endorses the above allegations.

Another allegation is that a government  official and a DySP had taken lakhs as bribe to settle the Thrissur Abkari case that was registered three months ago after a police van that smuggled spirit was seized. By examining the call list of the accused it was found that three Thrissur Abkaris were behind the spirit trafficking.

Though the former Commssioner Jacob Job had ordered strict action against the Abkaris, the officials dealing the case allegedly turned a Nelson’s eye. Jacob was not ready for any compromise. This incident was followed by his questioning Nisham regarding the latter’s Bangalore trip. After the interrogation became controversial, Jacob was issued a transfer order.

Nisham who came out  after the interrogation told Jacob’s subordinate that “I have told Sir (Jacob) everything and he will do what is necessary”. The subordinate statement coupled with Jacob's newfound rivalry with the Thrissur spirit mafia proved costly for the latter on official grounds as, he was subsequently suspended from the service.
