Edakkad railroad sabotage: Terror links to be probed

KANNUR: Police have started probe into the incident in which an unclaimed cycle was spotted on the track near Edakkad police station. This have strengthened the suspicion that the incident may have some terror link.

Some locals had spotted two persons coming with a cycle leaving it on the railway track and scooting from the place. Following a tipoff, the police had started investigation in that direction but they could not get any information about the persons, according to DySP Santhosh Kumar. He said he had given instructions to the officers to keep high alert in the area in the wake of terror suspicion.

The cycle was found  on the railway track in between Muzhappilangadu pond and Matom Railway gate on Monday midnight.  A goods train that passed that way shattered the cycle.

The police is trying to find out whether the culprits have been conducting the trial run for sabotage. Usually a cycle placed on a track will not cause any train accident but if it is placed in a particular angle, it could prove dangerous.

Edakkad police have informed Railway authorities about the incident and the security wing of the railways have reached the place for examination. The police have also registered a case and started the investigation.

Police have already registered about 20 cases related to rail sabotage attempts along Kannur-Kasargode districts. In the last month a similar sabotage attempt was found on the railway track within  Edakkad police station limits.
