Suryanelli case: First case with so many accused, observes SC

NEW DELHI:  The Supreme Court has rejected a plea for granting bail to the accused in the Suryanelli sex scandal.

The bench headed by Justice Deepak Mishra rejected the plea while considering the bail application submitted by the accused against the punishment awarded to them by the High Court.

“This is the first case in which 38 persons have sexually abused a girl. The last argument will be heard on August 19. All witnesses and evidence should be submitted before July 15,” the bench instructed.

Standing Counsel M R Ramesh Babu, representing the government submitted that the 16-year-old girl was kidnapped and sexually exploited over weeks.

But the defence counsel made an appeal to the court not to pronounce punishment based on mere statement of the girl, who is the complainant. “The incident happened before harsh punishment was introduced through an amendment in the law, post Delhi gang rape incident . And hence, the case be not considered on the basis of the new law,” the counsel argued. Following this argument, the bail plea was moved by the accused.

In the case, the government has filed appeal against four out of seven accused who was earlier granted bail by the high court.
