KOCHI: The Kerala High Court Wednesday made helmet compulsory for pillion riders in the state. A division bench of the high court passed the directive staying the approval of the government in 2003 relaxing helmets for pillion riders.
The court observed that the government's order is unlawful. Pillion rider’s safety is as important as the one riding the vehicle. There are chances for pillion riders to sustain head injuries while involved in accidents and so they should also wear helmets. The action of the government exempting pillion riders from wearing helmets is not right.
