MECCA: Two Keralites have been killed and 15 others injured in the crane collapse at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in which more than 100 people have died, the External Affairs Ministry said Saturday.
Muhmina, native of Palakkad, who left with a private Haj team, is one of the dead. The identity of the second Keralite has not been ascertained.
In the meanwhile, the toll has risen to 107. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said Indian officials from the Indian Consulate in Jeddah have been on the ground and have set up a 24X7 helpline to provide information and assistance.
"We have received reports that 15 Indians have been injured and are being assisted in various hospitals. These include 11 from the Haj Committee of India and four from Private Tour Operators," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson said.
A part of the massive crane collapsed as a result of strong winds and heavy rains, media reports said.
