THRISSUR: Former MLA Umesh Challiyil who quit JSS, a congress ally of the UDF, has joined the CPI. The CPI Thrissur district committee with the approval of the state leadership decided to induct him into the CPI. Party membership will be distributed to him at the meet to be convened on September 19 by party state secretary Kanam Rajendran. His decision to join the CPI will be announced at a press meet today. Umesh is also union president of the SNDP in Kodungalloor.
It is also heard that an agreement has been taken to field him in Kodunaglloor in the next assembly polls. T N Prathapan of the congress is the Kodungallor MLA now. He was elected to the assembly in 2001 from Kodungalloor as a representative of the JSS. He defeated Meenakshi Thampan of the CPI then. Though he contested against the CPI twice later, he was defeated.
Umesh was a noted leader of the JSS led by K R Gowri Amma. When the JSS split, he stood with Rajan Babu. He had some differences of opinion with the congress in Thrisurr. All these may have encouraged him to join the CPI.
