NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Uthup Varghese, a native of Kottayam Puthupally, an accused in the nursing recruitment scam. The court rejecting Uthup’s argument that there is no direct evidence against him said his plea cannot be considered without him reaching India.
The allegation against him is that he amassed wealth of Rs 300 crore by appointing nurses abroad. Varghese's Kochi-based recruitment firm had allegedly collected Rs 19.5 lakh from each nurse against a service charge of Rs 19,500 for job in Kuwait. He is reported to have recruited about 1,000 nurses in about a year.
