KASARGOD: In yet another major bank robbery in Kasargod in a month, burglars walked away with a huge quantity of gold and cash from Vijaya Bank at Cheruvathoor.
Police said the robbers, entered the bank by drilling a hole from a shop on the ground floor and broke open the lockers. The extent of the loss could be identified only after preliminary investigation, they added. However, reports said cash of Rs 3 lakh and gold worth Rs four crore were stolen from the bank.
The theft is suspected to have taken place on Sunday. It was noticed when employees examined the store room after opening the bank today. The gold was kept in four safes. The burglars broke open three lockers and stole the gold. Attempt was made to break open the fourth locker also.
District Police Superintendent Srinivas said a police team led by a DySP has been rushed to the bank. It would also assess the loss and added a special team has also been formed to crack the heist.
Rs 13 lakh and 21 kg gold were looted from Kudlu Co-operative Bank at Eriyal in the district by five masked men after holding two women employees hostage on September 7. Police successfully nabbed almost all the accused in this case.
