Thursday, July 07, 2011: Dayanidhi Maran, one of the accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case, today resigned as Cabinet minister. The CBI is probing his role in an alleged coercion to the telecom firm Aircel promoter C Sivasankaran to sell off his stake to the Malaysian Maxis group.
Maran is the member of the DMK, a leading ally of the UPA at the centre and is under the Supreme Court’s scanner in the 2G spectrum allocation for ‘not granting UAS licence to Aircel for two years’ during his tenure as the telecom minister leaving Sivasankaran with no option but to sell his shares to Maxis.
Maran was telecom minister between February 2004 and May 2007. He returned to the cabinet in 2009.
