Corruption in SNDP’s microfinance dealings: VS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has alleged at a press conference here on Wednesday that high-level corruption and swindling of money are taking place in microfinance dealings under SNDP yogam. “CBI should probe this. If the government is not ready…I would take the initiative for legal procedures,” VS said.

“From State Backward Community Development Corporation, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan had taken Rs 15 crore in the name of Microfinance for distributing loan to poor Ezhavas. Backkward Community Development Corporation usually takes loans from National Backward Community Corporation for implementing its various projects. This 15 crore was disbursed by the Backward community corporation among self-help groups under the SNDP. But this was lent to the consumers for 12 pc interest while a consumer could have been charged only 5 per cent interest. Natesan has swindled money by presenting fake utilisation certificates. SNDP has given loan to only less than 10 per cent of the people. In the project evaluation report prepared by Centre For Management Development, it is said that the SNDP had distributed loan at 12 percent interest and it had not helped self-help groups,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, VS said there was correspondence from the chief minister’s office against taking any action against SNDP despite Accounts General and CMD giving reports on its anomalies. “After utilising just 10 percent for distributing loan to people, the SNDP leaders have pocketed the rest for their personal needs. Many have filed criminal cases against this but the chief minister and home minister have been sitting on the files related to Vigilance inquiry report in this regard.

Ragarding Vellapally’s statement that he was rejecting VS’ allegation, he said Natesan can’t escape by saying so or rebuking me but have to answer all the allegations raised by me”.
